The Why -
    This is a deal i feel helps each team, the A’s acquired a 3rd base impact prospect that should be starter this year.  (I have 3rd base prospect depth with Torkelson).  I have been looking for young potential impact SP - I am getting that with Gilbert who will probably make a mid-season or late-season call up.  Prospects have them both rated close to the same.  Polanco i think helps fill a hole that the A’s have at SS, where McMahon fills a hole I have at 2B.  So, I feel I am getting players in positions I need, and looking at from the outside I think the same for the A’s

A's accept. Like the Mariners said this is about filling positions of need for me. Polanco will be a cheaper, albeit slightly less productive, option than if I tried to add one of the free agent SS's likely to be available and a likely resign next season. Hayes gives me a potentially viable replacement for Ruiz who I don't totally trust. It will leave me with a hole at 1B but I feel there are more free agent options there than at SS.
