It has come to TABs attention that Shohei Ohtani (LAA - SP/OF) by the letter of the law should be a free agent. Japanese free agents don't go to the signing team but to the highest bidder on the open market.
Since we missed it and he's a big fish (top prospect in baseball on some lists), we want to put it to a league vote as to whether he should be made a free agent immediately or shelved until next year. Many owners have spent their money elsewhere when they might've instead gone for Ohtani.
Let us know what you think. Thanks.

I want to express what I think but this is an open forum and we would like to hear from as many GMs as possible.
We dropped the ball on Othani he should have been posted with rest of free agents. I believe he is different than the normal FAs we randomly post in-season because he is a potential star who likely will command a hefty salary.
At this point I am not sure what GMs could even really be part of the bidding for him.
My vote would be to withhold him until next year free agent class.

At this point the most equitable thing would be to wait and allow all teams the opportunity to sign him. I personaly at this point, even if I had cap space, would not sign bid on him. However, after watching him for a year we would all have a better understanding of how his game will translate to Major Leagues and I might be in on him next year.

Since I still have space on my salary cap I would be more in favor of having him this year. However, I think it's fairer to wait until next year.

I agree that we should wait until next year.

I think waiting is probably the best decision. The only other option I could think of would be to put him in the minors draft, however that goes against the current rules. If that was chosen, it would obviously be a one time thing as we completely forgot about him somehow. Otherwise, Waiting will probably be the fairest option for the league.

Thats what I meant. Again that would be the only other option to me that would make any sense if we were to do anything other than wait until next FA.

Treat him as a FA this season. Makes little sense to not include him in league.

You are right, it does not make a lot of sense to exclude him in the league. But, it makes even less sense to throw him out there as a Free Agent after the majority of the league spent their Free Agent budget without the knowledge that Ohtani would be available. Not many people have much cap room left so the few people that have money would be able to quickly did out of reach of the entire league. It is through no fault of any owner that they spent without the knowledge of Ohtani's availability, so as most people seem to be saying is it would be the most equitable solution to leave him out until next season's Free Agent period. The upside to that is we will all have the time to see how Ohtani adjusts to the major leagues. He may figure it out and be great in the U.S. or he may continue to struggle like he has done so far. We all get to wait and see and no team gets stuck with a potentially bad contract if he doesn't figure it out.
Let it ride a year!

Everyone gets a vote, I disagree Ironically from someone not even allowed to bid currently because his roster page is not even correct to allow him to bid as it does not even list how much cap space he actually is which is required to bid. But yes everyone gets a say.

I agree should be next year - or if you want to do it this year - set a date like a week or two weeks from now - so teams can try and clear cap space with trades or releases -
I am good either way
