Previous: 300,000 (2017)
New Offer: 12,500,000 (2020)(2021TO)
This offer is more than what the 3 year averages of Felix Hernandez got and more than Price. Kluber had a stellar 2017 which is raising his average, otherwise he would be in the 80s. Hernandez's deal was signed at the age of 28.
I feel that Hernandez is a good comparison to Kluber, but Hernandez has been more consistently pitching in the 90s whereas Kluber had one great year last year that is skewing his 3 year average. Otherwise Kluber's average would be in the 80s. I feel that 12,500,000 is more than fair for a player being signed for the first time at the age of 32 to begin the season. The other high priced players were signed in their mid 20s. Also the contracts of Price $10,000,000 and Hernandez $11,000,000 both who have similar averages can not be disregarded. This new offer is now 2,500,000 above Price and 1,500,000 above Hernandez, and both were younger than Kluber when they signed their deals. Also when Price was signed he had just finished a season score of 95.9.
Dallas Keuchel just signed for 9,500,000. If you eliminate his one low season and average the other two his average is 91.05 compared to Kluber's 91.62. Just slightly below Kluber's three year average. Removing outliers Keuchel's two year average is 91.05 and Kluber's two year average is 87.43 making Keuchel more valuable yet he signed for 9,500,000. Zimmerman scored only slightly below Kluber and he signed for 9,000,000. Just because Kluber hit 100 for one season does not automatically make him a 13,500,000 pitcher especially when the track record of re-signs in this league that matches his 3 year performance would place him below the 11,000,000 range if you average those 4 salaries (Price, Hernandez, Zimmerman, Keuchel) together.
